My Story
In 2015, on my son's first birthday I went out for a typical 5 mile run and nearly died. At the end of my run my heart went into ventricular tachycardia. My heart rate went from 150 to over 300 BPM. I was incredibly lucky to survive.
At the time I was training for my first half Ironman. I hadn't been feeling well, but I thought it was because I was still a year postpartum and breastfeeding. I had a history of passing out in 3 marathons, but every cardiologist ad doctor I had been to said I was fine. After that day it took nearly 10 months to finally diagnose me with a rare, genetic heart disease. It has been called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) but now it is being call Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy (ACM)
My diagnosis changed my life. I am still very active (canyoneering on the right near Zion) but have had to make big life changes. I have written about it, been on podcasts and speak about what it's like to struggle with athletic identity in hopes my story can help others. Feel free to listen, read and explore below.
